I remember the fall of 2003 and our family’s transition to Plymouth, MN for Seminary. On our first trip to the local Target store, I immediately noticed everyone walking around, pushing a cart with a built-in cupholder and their $4.00 Starbuck’s coffee. And my mind immediately made a judgment: “look at all these wealthy coffee snobs—I would never do that!” Of course, you know how this story ends…in about 6 months I had become one of them!!
Of all our “secret, little sins” favoritism and judging likely rank near the top. James tackles this topic in our sermon text this week (James 2:1-13) and describes both how this compromises our Christian witness and how it can be corrected. As we continue our “Real Faith—Real Life” sermon series, we will look at this text in a sermon titled “Witness.”
