Life Under the Sun

Life Under the Sun

As a youngster I had pet gerbils. They were finely furry and definitely cute and cuddly, and I recall vividly how I enjoyed watching them get onto the metal wheel in their cage and run around and around, their little legs moving so fast and yet really going no where despite their best efforts. If one is honest, we likely find ourselves in this scenario more often than we care to admit. We gain, but never have enough; we work, but there is always more to do; we think we ‘know’, but we don’t; we plan, and the plan goes awry; all of which leads us to conclude that so much of life and its endeavors are truly ‘vanity.’
The encouragement in this is that you are in good company. Solomon, in all his wisdom, struggled with the same, and this week we will begin a series of sermons on the book of Ecclesiastes titled “Life Under the Sun”. Over the course of the next few months we will join in a journey with the “Teacher” as he seeks to find meaning amidst the meaningless and to gain victory over vanity.
