I liken Paul’s discussion of spiritual gifts in 1 Corinthians 12 to that of “opinions”—everybody has one! Seriously though, Paul sets forth for us this week an extended discourse on spiritual gifts, which like all good things, if used improperly, will bring harm and not benefit. Our focus will be upon how we are to use spiritual gifts with wisdom and grace, thereby building up the body of Christ which is the church.
It will be of great help this week to read through this chapter a few times prior to Sunday. And if you are especially ambitious, it would also be beneficial to read through other places in Scripture where a list of spiritual gifts is provided: Romans 12:3-10; Ephesians 4:1-16; and 1 Peter 4:8-11.
