A Solid Foundation

It is sobering to see how quickly a seemingly solid foundation can crumble.

It causes me to remember Jesus words in Matthew 7:24-27, “Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell—and great was its fall.”

Without a doubt, this is a ‘stormy’ season for us, for the world!

Our Securities Threatened

In just a few months, or a couple of days, and even overnight; an unseen virus has invaded the foundations of our security, at least the security that many in our country have counted on. Securities that for the most part are good… a stable job, roof overhead, full pantry, reasonably good health, manageable debt, small nest-egg, robust economy, state of the art medical care, representative government, national safety, personal freedoms. In fact, most folks would not have thought an ‘on-all-fronts’ sudden shaking possible. But it was and is… at least for most and maybe on some level for all of us. Wow! And then to think that around the infected globe the vast majority don’t have a fraction of these presumed securities! What a ‘shaking wakeup’ call!

Tragically, for those not at peace with Christ, these securities are all they have… their only foundation. Sadly, many believers in Christ, have also made these good, but ‘sandy’ securities, their main foundation. In both camps, the same anxieties, fears, and panic-driven responses take their toll. The results are universal:  sleeplessness, hording, and even despair.

Our Foundation is Christ

Praise God, in times like these, we have a Savior! A Savior, Who bids us to look to Him, come to Him, surrender to Him, return to Him. Without condemnation, He offers Himself as the foundation on which to build… in which to rest.

The Rock that the Apostle Peter’s faith rested upon, as recorded in Matthew 16:16-18… “Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.”

As He promised, until the day of Peter’s Home-going, Christ bore him through life’s trials unto Glory’s triumph! When faith’s foundation is Christ, not the pandemic crises of life or even the gates of Hell can shake it.

“When faith’s foundation is Christ, not the pandemic crises of life or even the gates of Hell can shake it.”

Dear Heavenly Father, in Jesus’ Name, forgive me for trusting in the sandy foundations of my own making. Whether my days are calm or turbulent, help me to rest my faith in Christ and His Word alone. In childlike faith, with the hymn writer I proclaim, “On Christ the Solid Rock I stand – all other ground is sinking sand.”

Amen.
