Together We Remember

Together We Remember

The Beauty of Weekly Gathering

Week after week we come together as the church body to remind ourselves of what truly matters in this life. We come and receive LIFE in our Lord Jesus Christ through His Word and Sacraments. We experience Sabbath rest in God, NEEDING to come – because we are a people who forget all too easily that Christ is the source of LIFE! Together we remember.

God Speaks to Us

God speaks to us through His Word, and it is there that He reveals to us His character. As we read the Word of God in our homes and within our gatherings, we remember that God is HOLY! All throughout Scripture we see the majesty and glory of God as centerpiece, so this is why we plan our services full of songs about God and not just songs that highlight “us” and how “we” feel about Him. Not only do we sing songs together as the church about God, but we also sing songs to God in prayer and supplication. We converse with Him in song and cry out to the Lord just as the Psalmist David cried out to God. As His church we gather with Him and remember.

Our Need Revealed

As we experience the grandeur of God, the law of God shows us the gravity of our sin. We are unable to “get past” the fact that we will never measure up to the perfect standard God has put forth. In that moment, we are reminded that the purpose of the law is to do just that – to point out our shortcomings, as well as to show us our great need for something, Someone to mediate between us and God. Each week, I personally NEED to hear that my sin caused great pain and horror for Jesus, and that He bore this pain willingly out of love and obedience! So I turn to Jesus Christ, my great High Priest who intercedes for me and for you. Together as the body of Christ, we remember.

“Before the throne of God above I have a strong and perfect plea;
A great High Priest whose name is Love, Whoever lives and pleads for me!”

Good News on Display

I also remember the love that defines my life as a child of God. I’m now accepted as heir of God with Jesus because of what He did. Once I was lost in my sin and depravity, now I am found in Christ and His Spirit leads me! I can and should remember this on my own throughout the week, but as I gather with the body of Christ on Sundays, we together remember this Good News and are encouraged in our faith.

“The Gospel frees us to live each day in remembrance unto the glory of God.”

The Gospel frees us to live each day in remembrance unto the glory of God. Psalm 96:2 encourages us to “Sing to the Lord, bless His name; proclaim good tidings of His salvation from day to day.” We remember together in church, yes, but we also live in remembrance within our day-to-day vocations. Each day we rise and remember the Gospel story. As parents we remember the Gospel and proclaim this Good News to our families in both word and action. We go forth in full knowledge that His Spirit is with us, and that we are created to be His hands and feet to all we meet. His Word guides us, and it brings us to remembrance with each page turn.

“We remember together in church, yes, but we also live in remembrance within our day-to-day vocations.

The Church Serving Together

As the body of Christ, together we remember His redeeming work in our service to God and one another. I Peter 4:10 says: “As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” What I experience in our church body is the love of God displayed in all those who serve here. Each week we recall the Gospel in Scripture and within songs of praise, and the power of the Holy Spirit works through the body of Christ as they use their gifts to serve the Lord and His church.

I marvel as numerous musicians, audio/visual techs, ushers, greeters, communion helpers, bulletin folders, and church leadership work together Christ’s to serve one another in love. What a joy it is to see us all striving together for the Lord. My family and I are so thankful to be a part of our local body of Christ at Abiding Savior Free Lutheran.

Weekly Worship – A Beautiful Thing

God is present through His Word, by His Spirit, in the body of Christ (His Church), and in the Lord’s Supper. The beauty of weekly worship is that God Himself meets us afresh every week. His perfect love is re-remembered again through the rhythms of grace as we re-tell the story of the Gospel over and over again.

“The beauty of weekly worship is that God Himself meets us afresh every week.”

See you in church!
